Aalto University (AALTO)

Aalto University (Espoo, Finland) is an independent legal entity, based on its own foundation. It was founded 2010 as a merger of three highly-regarded universities: the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Thus, in AALTO science and arts meet technology and business. There are around 20 000 students (of which 3500 are doctoral students) and of the 5000 staff, 370 are professors. School of Chemical Technology centers its main activity at research and education in the science and technology of industrial conversion processes of renewable and non-renewable natural resources. At our school the focus in developing bioeconomy is in the research and development of chemicals, fuels, fibre products and materials from renewable biomass utilizing biotechnical, chemical and thermal processing technologies.

In the School of Chemical Technology, the Departments of the Forest Products Technology and the Biotechnology and Chemical Technology have the main role in the bioeconomy activities at the Aalto University. They are partners in the BIOECONOMY infrastructure. Furthermore, they exhibit research and provide education in the fields of bio-based materials technology, bioproduct chemistry, biorefineries, clean technologies, forest products surface chemistry, materials chemistry of cellulose, paper converting and packaging, printing technology, wood chemistry, wood material science and technology, wood material technology, biochemistry, bioforest, biohybrid materials, biomolecular materials, bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering, industrial chemistry, molecular biotechnology, microbiology, plant design, polymer technology as well as process control and automation. Thus, the expertise at the Aalto University covers all the relevant fields of the forest bioeconomy and its industrial applications.
